The answer is an emphatic "No!" The easiest way to consider this is to put yourself in the shoes of the trackable's owner. Trackable owners like to see the logs from far and wide that the movement of their items generates, and they don't care if you don't have a trackable to replace it if you find theirs in a cache. This also goes for "hotels," which are not an official cache type. Once again, the trackable's owner would not want their item left in a hotel just because you don't have a replacement, and this is what matters most - not the opinion of the cache owner. Also, because the item does not belong to you when you grab it from a cache, you don't have to leave anything in the cache when you remove it.
