CITO Location: Kearny Marsh
CITO Date / Time: Sunday, June 6, 2010 @ 10AM - 12PM
Kearny Marsh is the only fresh-water marsh in the Meadowlands, severely degraded over the years because it is next to old Keegan Dump, an orphaned landfill. The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) has spent $30 million to remediate the landfill and prevent it from polluting the marsh anymore.
The marsh is home to moorhens, herons, coots, grebes, bitterns, and swallows. The views of the marsh and New York City skyline are awesome.
In honor of National Trail Day, NNJC will be partnering with NJMC to assist with a trail clean up at Kearny Marsh. We will meet at the northeast corner of the Gunnel Oval off Schuyler Avenue at 10AM. NJMC will supply trashbags and gloves with participants advised to bring their own weed clippers and other supplies. We will be cleaning up the trail that runs parallel to the marsh along an abandoned railroad right-of-way with the possibility of going out in canoes to work on the marsh itself.
Afterward, there are plenty of geocaching opportunities in nearby Richard W. DeKorte Park (Lyndhurst), Hudson County Park at Laurel Hill (Secaucus), and Losen Slote Creek Park (Little Ferry).
